Eunuchs

Eunuchs are an interesting contradiction. They're slaves, but they have one of the most elevated positions in the House, taking orders only from the wife they serve and, occasionally, the archon (other slaves answer to senior slaves, overseers and members of the House). They're given generous allowances and have a reputation for enjoying luxury.

The eunuch's job is to both protect and chaperon his charge and ensure proper behavior. The fact that eunuchs more often enable wives' misbehavior than deter it has not been lost on the Edessans -- the complicit eunuch is a reoccurring theme in Edessan theater. Most eunuchs were sold around age six to one of the training houses by their archon, which is considered a better fate than being sold to work in the mines or galley ships. A few eunuchs are prisoners of war, chosen for their pretty faces or musical skill.
